A step-by-step guide to the most common questions about cell-free DNA prenatal screening.
About the cfDNA Navigator
This interactive guide was created by Dr. Chukwuma Onyeije, MFM at Atlanta Perinatal Associates to help patients understand cell-free DNA (cfDNA) prenatal screening — also called NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing).
What This Tool Does
It walks you through two of the most common questions patients ask:
"Should I get the NIPT?" — Helps you think through your personal situation and values.
"My result was positive — what does that mean?" — Explains what a positive result actually tells you (and what it doesn't).
What This Tool Does NOT Do
This is not a diagnostic tool. It does not replace a conversation with your doctor or genetic counselor. A positive NIPT result is not a diagnosis — it means further evaluation is recommended.
Clinical Basis
Content is based on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) guidelines on prenatal genetic screening, updated through 2026.
